Is Prosperity Gospel Biblical?

At the core of the Prosperity Gospel is the emphasis on the importance of personal empowerment, and proposing that it is God’s will for his people to be blessed.

People who believe such believed sickness or poverty can be resolved through donations of money, visualization, positive confession, or sometimes through extreme belief in the grace that God has blessed you because you deserve it as a child of God

However, you can see easily if one is not careful, it can promote irresponsible idolatry of personal needs over God’s desires for our life.

Paul the apostle advocated that such destructive teachings on greed for money and wealth are identified as false teachers and urged Christians to avoid them

and constant friction between people of corrupt minds, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. – 1 Tim 6:5

The pursuit of wealth and success is a dangerous path for Christians and one which God warns about:

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” – 1 Tim 6:10

Do you see if riches was the reason for Godliness wouldn’t you think Jesus would have pursued it?

But Jesus did not, and even the disciples in the Bible did not as well and that gives you a clear sign something is not wrong in the theological beliefs.

The only disciple that was concerned with wealth was only Judas. And we all know what happened to him and I do not think any Christians want to follow his path right?

Paul Instructed Believes to Avoid Such Teachings

If you are still not convinced, let’s read what Paul has to say about greed

For of this, you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. – Eph 5:5

Paul instructed the Ephesians believers to avoid such teachings how much do you today as a Christian?

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. – 1 Tim 6:10

You might be thinking but I do not love money?

But here’s the thing you need to understand, our actions speak louder than words.

I have many Christian friends who believe in the prosperity that they believe that God will only bless them in their work or business. And they give praises to God whenever there is a blessing. Which is nothing wrong I do that too.

But here’s the thing.

How would you respond if God decided to give you a test in your faith and not bless you? Will you still praise God? Or blame yourself for not having enough faith or worst curse God?

Christians Today Are Badly Affected By This Incomplete Theology

Think that is not possible? I can tell you from first-hand experience I have encountered Christians who did exactly just that.

People who blindly believe in the prosperity gospel so much that unfortunately, they treat Jesus like some fortune, God, to bless their life and cannot accept any form of suffering or loss in life.

There are real people even today, who pray to God and believe that God will save and heal them. But instead of saving them, God allows the person to pass away and get promoted to Heaven.

Some, unfortunately, took it very negatively and curse God and leave church and Jesus just because they cannot accept what happen and were not willing to let go of their loved ones.

You see dear friends, God is all-knowing and he was not the one that cause the bad things that happen on this earth. It was satan the time that does all these bad things and plan all these harmful things (Job 1:13-22) that we simply blame the wrong person all the time.

Why Does God Allow Suffering or Bad Situations in Life?

The honest answer, I do not know the exact answer. Sometimes it can be the molding of our character through situations, sometimes it can be God protecting us from harm that we do not see. It is also even possible that God can use the seemingly bad situation created by satan to be used to have miracle healing so that people can get to know the goodness of God too.

But whatever it is, this I know for sure is

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. – Isaiah 55:8

So try not to question God why, but instead, learn to ask God what that I do not see in this bad situation you are in.

And also learn how to be contented with what you already have then constantly asking God for more.

The Issue of Prosperity Gospel

You might disagree on this, but Prosperity Gospel theology does encourage greed in some sense, and greed by the way is a sin.

If you ever have a thought that you be rich from praying or giving to Jesus that is greed my friend and it is actually satan tempting you to sin in greed.

The Bible teaches all believers to be contented with what they have. In fact, content is mentioned at least 30 times in the Bible as one of the core teachings of Jesus.

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have”- Hebrews 13:5a

Interesting most Christians go the extreme opposite direction to always seeking more but never realize they need to be content with what they already have with them.

Here’s What You Can Do Today

  • Acknowledge everything in your life is seriously in God’s hand, you cannot demand God to go only your way
  • Learn to seek what God wants you to do then rather than what you seek for yourself to enjoy
  • Spend time today to reflect and read the Bible to understand God then just depend on a pastor to tell you what you need to know
  • Stop treating Jesus as your fortune God
  • Stop praying to Jesus only for your work or career and success
  • Stop giving your money to church expecting something in return for blessings, God does not need your money for your information.
  • Learn to look at suffering and problems in life as opportunities to understand how God can use that situation in your life to shine for him.
  • Learn to ask God what you can do in your life to serve the Kingdom of God and not your selfish desires today
  • Learn to surrender your work and business to the Lord and ask God how can you use your work or business today to witness and shine for Jesus.
